Molting Hermies! *whoop, whoop, whoop!*

After I cleaned and rearranged my hermies home the other day, one of them promptly buried herself! This is a good thing! It means she is molting. Not to be confused with changing her shell.

Hermits are decapod crustaceans, they have their own shell or exoskeleton, except in the most vulnerable spot, the abdomen. As a result, they take over outer shells left abandoned by other sea creatures. As they grow, or sometimes by whim they change these shells.

Once a year or so they molt. They bury themselves in damp sand and break out of the exoskeleton and the new one takes a few days to harden. They are VERY vulnerable to attack, especially from other hermies, at this point, so we need to be VERY vigilant and keep a close eye on her this week or so. I might even remove the hermies that aren’t molting to a covered plastic shoebox until she emerges from the sand.

Thankfulness

I am thankful this year for many things, not the least of which are:

  • FINALLY having a part time job and an awesome boss who is willing to work with me on all the time off I've needed in this past year due to shoulder surgery, this latest emergency surgery as well as my upcoming knee replacement.
  • Having this wonderful ol' house to keep us warm and sheltered, despite the fact that it is an old house and needs lots of tender loving care; read: expensive at times! It has just about everything we need and it's full of good times, good memories, good food, and good folks! It also is the investment that is our future! (Southwest - here we come!)
  • Mom. Her health and attitude are better now that she is here with us. This is not to say that it isn't trying at times with her here, but my stress levels are much lower now that I don't have to worry about her being alone.
  • Our pets. Nero the dog, Henry and Twink the cats, Harriet and Hermione the hermit crabs and the fish. They all bring us joy and unconditional love.
  • My creative outlets. They calm and relax me.
And last but certainly not least...
  • My WONDERFUL partner, Nancy who has stood by me, being a rock, encouraging and supporting me during all these health issues. She is just simply the best thing that has EVER happened to me! I love her dearly, however I doubt she really has any idea how MUCH she truly means to me! Simple words cannot describe what she means to me. She is my everything!
Happy holiday to everyone!!

Studio Redo

This is my studio redo. After Mom moved in with us my studio was moved upstairs, to the room it was in originally. The small one in the front, south east corner. It's really a cozy little room. I like working in it!! Finding time to spend in it isn't really difficult either. I seem to find at least one day a week to really work in there. Right now, that's a good thing. I just found out a couple weeks ago that I have to have knee replacement surgery. During that recovery I'll have lots of time to work in there! It'll be different from both my shoulder surgeries, I'll be able to use my hands and arms! I'll be able to clay and bead and sew and crochet!! YAY! I couldn't do much if any of these things I adore for almost 2 years while I recuperated from TWO shoulder surgeries!!!! Ak!

Anyway, this is the entrance.

The other side of the door. Behind which is a bookcase housing all my magazines and books.

This is the main work station. To the left is the precious metal clay area and to the right is my polymer clay station. The cubbies to the right of the leather chair hold all sorts of non jewelry findings, stamps, texture sheets, clay, etc...

A small storage are in front of the window. My extruder, heat gun, food processor, textures, inclusions (metal foils, embossing powders, etc) live here.

Here is a shot of all the hand tools. (exacto blades, sculpting tools, scissors etc...)

Here's my storage/ wire working area. On top is my light box/ photographing supplies, television, VCR, etc. Nero's bed is on the floor in front of this cabinet.

Here's where three of my studio mascots live. Bob the beta fish and Harriet and Hermione hermit crab. *smile* Below is my fabric and yarn stash.

Sewing station to the left, beading station to the right.

Of Babies and Blooms!!

We had babies at work the other day! I took pics of them w/ the camera on my phone.

This first one is of eight tiny baby mice! That wriggly pile of lil' pinkies is actually baby mice! Can you believe it!!??

Not very cute yet!!

I'll post pics of them again as they change and grow almost daily!

This next shot is of Mom and babies! She is doing very well as a Mom! She is protective but not mean. We can switch out her food dish and water bottle with no squabbles or thoughts of "baby snacking upon" as often does happen when we interfere with nature!

PetsMart is very concerned over the health and welfare of all animals. That's why they designate each store as a specific gender store. Our store is a "female" store and we only carry female small pets. This is to "ensure" that overpopulation is kept to a minimum.

Hmmmmm

Good idea!

Yeah, right!!! In theory anyway!

We have a day lily (tiger lily) in the back yard and it's been blooming this past week. Almost every day there is a new bloom to marvel over, each one's color is slightly different from the day befores' bloom, depending upon how much sun there was that day! This was Saturday's bloom.
